What is posterior crossbites?

Posterior crossbites occur when the upper teeth are slightly or significantly inside of the lower teeth when a person bites down. This can cause an uneven or uncomfortable bite, as well as lead to issues with the jaw and tooth wear. Posterior crossbites can be caused by genetic factors, tooth growth and development issues, thumb sucking, and airway problems. Treatment may involve orthodontic appliances, such as braces, expanders, or aligners, to gradually shift the teeth into proper alignment. In severe cases, jaw surgery may be necessary to correct the problem. Early intervention for posterior crossbites is highly recommended to minimize the need for more invasive treatment later in life.
